Two years ago, ERP integration was a line item on an RFP. Today, it is the first filter. The distinction matters because checkbox integration creates operational debt. Every manual handoff is a chance for error, delay, or data drift. Over 12 months, those gaps compound into material spend visibility problems.

The cost of weak ERP integration is not abstract. It shows up in specific, measurable ways across the procurement lifecycle.
Manual re-entry. When approved purchases do not automatically become POs in the ERP, someone on the finance or procurement team manually enters them. This adds days to the cycle and introduces transcription errors. Sometimes after the PO has been issued. At that point, the options are uncomfortable: claw back the approval, find budget from another line, or accept the overrun.
Migrating from a legacy procure-to-pay system is not a lift-and-shift. It is an integration-first exercise. The organizations that get this right follow a sequence that prioritizes ERP connectivity before everything else.
Phase 1: Audit your integration surface. Before evaluating any tool, map every system that touches procurement data: ERP, CLM, HRIS, identity provider, eSignature, ticketing.
